Plumbing problems rank near the top of my least-favorite home maintenance issues. I hate the mess, I hate the smells, and I hate the expense. While I understand how plumbing works, I don’t have the tools and skills to make repairs easily. So, I do my best to pay attention to the flow: Attending to small clogs and doing my best to prevent them is so much better than a huge disaster. Most of us take plumbing systems for granted until there is a problem. Drain care should really be something we attend to every day. While we can’t control the rate a pipe joint disintegrates, we can help prevent clogs with just a few “rules”: When you do have a slow-moving drain or a clog, take a moment to consider the probable cause. Using the right type of drain cleaner and the one that will cause the least harm to your plumbing system will give you the best results. Many drain cleaners contain harsh chemicals like l...

Paper thin: Thai summit recycling drive mocked by environmentalists

BANGKOK: Despite offering chairs and notebooks made from recycled paper at a Bangkok summit, Thailand and its Southeast Asian allies were accused Sunday of a “greenwash” with their oceans and communities brimming with plastic refuse. Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and China dump more than half of the eight million tonnes of plastic waste that end up in oceans every year, according to a 2017 Ocean Conservancy report. The 10-country Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) — whose leaders are meeting this weekend in Bangkok — also receives more than a quarter of global plastic waste, mostly imported from developed economies. But host country Thailand has been touting its “green” credentials during the two-day summit, showing off T-shirts spun from recycled plastic waste, biodegradable food containers, and 300 boxy chairs made out of recycled paper — all produced solely for the summit. Greenpeace’s Tara Buakamsri scoffed at the “unnecessary” production of new items for the summit, in a region where plastic bags, cups and plates are liberally doled out at supermarkets and street stalls. The talks saw the agreement of the “Bangkok Declaration” to combat marine de...

The 2nd Tap Takes Over Former Noble Rey Taproom at Dallas Farmers Market

Get the most out of your experience with a personalized all-access pass to everything local on events, music, restaurants, news and more. When Dallas brewery Noble Rey announced its closing in March, one of the primary questions local craft beer lovers were left asking was what would become of the brewery’s satellite tap room at the Dallas Farmers Market. While we wait to see what becomes of Noble Rey’s primary taproom and brewery space in the Design District, we do now have an answer on the Farmers Market spot. The 2nd Tap is an interesting concept that fills the Market’s food hall space left unoccupied by Noble Rey. Operating as a sort of “taproom takeover,” instead of the usual “tap takeover” one might see in a local bar, according to the bar’s website, the 2nd Tap will feature one brewery’s creations at a time. According to a recent report from Beer in Big D, the featured brewery will rotate every three weeks. While the eight draft taps are indeed dedicated to one brewery, the current featured brewery is Manhattan Project Beer Company, a cooler was stocked with cans of Shiner Bock and other beer options, but with wine, cider and other non-beer, non-Manhattan Project offerin...

Where to buy and sell authentic designer handbags that look new: Rebag

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you’ll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase. Over the past few years, there has been serious growth in the luxury-goods market. In 2017 alone, Millennials contributed to an 85% surge in the sector. When one thousand dollars can pay your rent and then some, it can seem excessive to drop that money on a single purse. Yet, for many, the appeal of luxury handbags is undeniable. The leather is softer, the structure sturdier, and many of the designs iconic. A beautiful, designer handbag can take an outfit from average to avant-garde. On an average budget, though, luxury bags might be out of the question. That’s when you turn to Rebag, a site that lets you buy and sell authentic designer handbags. Rebag sells authentic second-hand bags from the most sought-after brands. The company only accepts bags from an exclusive list of fewer than 50 designers — Gucci, Prada, and Chanel among others. Rebag won’t just accept any bag from a luxury brand, either. There are strict guidelines on what condition bags must be in in order to be accepted. You’ll need ...

Datebook: Umar Rashid turns colonial histories upside down in paintings at VPAM

The battles of an imagined empire, the fine art of Korean calligraphy and a tribute to a rather magical San Francisco space. Summer has landed, but the shows are still going strong. Here are some exhibitions and events to check out in the coming week: Umar Rashid (Frohawk Two Feathers), “The World You Know is a Fiction…” at the Vincent Price Art Museum. Rashid takes American historical narratives, scrambles them, then reimagines them in paintings that take on issues such as colonization, war and the building of empires. Produced over several years, the work on view at the museum explores the vicissitudes of power and centers on figures that occupy his so-called “Frenglish Empire,” a fusion of the French and British colonial enterprises. Expect to see battalions of militiamen, freed slaves, indigenous nobility, all drawing on the visual and material traditions of colonial art. Opens Saturday at 5 p.m. and runs through Dec. 21. 1301 Cesar Chavez Ave., Monterey Park, vincentpriceartmuseum.org. “Beyond Line: Art of Korean Writing,” at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. In Korea, calligraphy is considered one of the highest forms of art — and this show gathers some of the highest ...

I just recently had a dead battery on the Town Car, so learning how to properly jump

I just recently had a dead battery on the Town Car, so learning how to properly jump start a car battery has been on my mind. I’m telling you, there’s a lot to say on this subject once you get into it! Send your queries to [email protected]com. Spare no details and ask for a speedy resolution if you’re in a hurry…but be realistic, and use your make/model specific forums instead of TTAC for more timely advice. My father had a 1972 Porsche 911 that had two batteries. It wasn’t for redundancy, it was more a matter of it being easier to fit two smaller batteries rather than one large one, a 911 being a fairly small car. I’m not sure how well a reserve battery would fare. With something as large as a town car, there’s plenty of room to store a moderately powerful jump box in the trunk. Maybe the better question is why did the battery die? If the car is sitting for long periods of time, you should consider adding a battery disconnect switch. This works well in boats, and they sit unused for weeks at a time. Boats also use different batteries. They usually have deep cycle marine batteries designed with that in mind. My old Jeep came with one installed… didn’t last long, it was o...

It is often a surprise to see how other people react to mains electricity when they

It is often a surprise to see how other people react to mains electricity when they encounter it in a piece of equipment. As engineers who have dealt with it both personally and professionally for many years it is easy to forget that not everyone has had that experience. On one hand we wince at those who dive in with no fear of the consequences, on the other we are constantly surprised at the number of people who treat any item with more than a few volts in it as though it was contaminated with radioactive anthrax and are scared to even think about opening it up. We recently had a chat among the Hackaday writers about how we could approach this subject. The easy way out is to be all Elf-and-Safety and join the radioactive anthrax crowd. But the conclusion we came to was that this site is a resource for hackers and makers. Some of you are going to lift the lid on boxes containing significant voltages no matter what, so we thought we’d help you do it safely rather than just listen for the distant screams. So here follows the first in a series on how to approach electronic devices containing high voltages, and live to tell the tale. By “high voltages” we mean anything up to mains v...

Fabricator bends aluminum tubing to make canine carriers

The variety of frames, and bends needed to make the frames, is substantial. Some bending is done by hand; most is done by machine. If you wanted to find a domestic animal in your neighborhood, you wouldn’t have to knock on too many doors to find one. The American Veterinary Medical Association estimates 36.5 percent of U.S. households have dogs. Data from the American Kennel Club indicates that the most popular breed is the Labrador retriever, followed by the German shepherd and the golden retriever. Elsewhere on the list are the bloodhound, Siberian husky, Shetland sheepdog, border collie, Norwegian elkhound, whippet, and greyhound. Whether favored for companionship or activities such as retrieving, herding, hunting, racing, or any of myriad other duties or tasks, nearly all of them rely on mobility, whether for work or sport. Regrettably for man’s best friend, injury or advancing age can inhibit a dog’s ability to get around. When traveling gets tough, what can the dog’s companion do? If the dog is a small to midsize breed, such as a Cavalier King Charles spaniel, a pug, or a cairn terrier, the dog’s companion can buy a carrier, of course. A good place to start shopping is To...

REVIEW – Every gadget I have reviewed has one important thing in common: They all use

REVIEW – Every gadget I have reviewed has one important thing in common: They all use power. It doesn’t matter if it’s a smartphone, Bluetooth speaker or wireless headphones—the batteries eventually need charging. To charge my various devices, I use outlets, hubs, my car and when I’m not around a power source—a battery backup. Let’s now take this a step further—the electricity is out and won’t return for a few days (when you live in Florida this isn’t far-fetched), your devices are dying and that trusty battery backup is drained also. Now what? Consider a large backup for your backups—a portable power station. One such mini-monster is the Jackery Explorer 240Wh Emergency Backup Lithium Battery. The Jackery Explorer 240 is a portable power station. Among its many ports are a 12V auto, two USB and one 110V AC. It’s made for outdoor and indoor use and is capable of charging multiple devices at the same time. It is a sine wave inverter. This means that the power output is clean power—like utility-supplied electricity. Inverter power is safer for delicate electronics. The Jackery Explorer 240 is a power station that can power almost anything for a decent amount of time—depending on t...
