METRO DETROIT — Spring is quickly approaching, and if you’re looking to start a few fun projects to spruce up your cottage or lakefront home, you’ll want to head out to the Cottage & Lakefront Living Show.
The Cottage & Lakefront Living Show will return for the 13th year and will take place Feb. 27 through March 1 at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi.
Dawn Baker, the show manager, said the event is an opportunity to browse for new ideas to enhance your cottage and your experience this summer.
“This is a great preseason event that celebrates summer in Michigan. Whether you want to begin to actualize the dream of buying or building a cottage, renovate or decorate the family cabin, or even buy the latest for fun on the waterfront, this is an event for you,” Baker said in an email interview.
The show will include walk-through, full-size cabins; choices for docks or seawalls; the newest water toys; artists with their creations; experts to answer questions; landscaping ideas; and more.
“Everything is in one place at this preseason show so you can make the most of your time this summer,” Baker stated in a press release. “Plan now if you are looking to buy, build, rent or maintain your vacation property and live life from the lakefront.”
Experts throughout the show will share tips, advice and knowledge on purchasing, renting, planning, maintaining and enjoying spring, summer and year-round vacation and lakefront homes.
“The seminars are a great educational and entertaining opportunity for showgoers. Back this year are sessions on cottage succession planning,” Baker said by email.
“The best advice I can share is for people to plan now. Many renovations, additions or projects are going to need some time to be completed or installed. If you want to make the most of this summer, get planning and schedule the work now. We bring many of these companies all under one roof so that getting a jump-start and activating your plans can happen with the ease of one location — comparing products or projects all in one location,” Baker said in an email.
The show will include displays, information and educational materials about builders; new construction log, timber frame and cedar homes; real estate agents; financing; vacation property for sale or rent; rustic and fine furnishings; shoreline and cottage landscaping; lakeshore maintenance and cottage services; boats; docks; decks; seawalls; outdoor recreational equipment; and stand-up paddleboards.
Landscaping ideas will feature cabin, cottage and lakefront properties incorporated into displays that include outdoor living spaces, fireplaces, cooking options, patios, decks and garden products. Pontoon boats, fishing boats, family sport boats, Jet Skis, kayaks, wakeboards and runabouts will all be on display.
Michigan artists will present metal art, rustic furniture and home furnishings, jewelry, and cottage décor for sale.
Mike Wilbraham, the show producer who created the Cottage & Lakefront Living Show, said in a phone interview that the show offers attendees unique access to businesses.
“I think the biggest thing about the show is that it brings together the sorts of businesses that people want to do business with when working on their cottage or lakefront home,” he said.
“If you’re thinking about replacing something on your cottage, all those sorts of exhibitors are there. And something new in the media is the problem with high water levels, and this may be the year you might need to do something about it. There are everyday, run-of-the-mill things that you have to do as a property owner, and this offers ideas for that,” he said.
Attendees also can choose the photo entry that they think best captures cottage and lakefront living at the Water & Woods Photo Contest.
During the event, families can locate and mark where their vacation home is located on an oversized Michigan map.
The show will also feature an oversized sandbox, and children of all ages are invited to put their toes in the sand and build a sandcastle.
